For better or worse, Simon is a survivor. Despite being raised in a nihilistic cult (Eden), the man wants nothing more than to continue living. He refuses to become nothing but fodder for a singular tree amidst a dying universe. It's why he takes the opportunity from the C.O.I. (Coalition of Iron) to join the Convict Realization Program in hopes of securing his freedom. Although he was complicit in the crimes committed against them that landed him in jail in the first place, he didn't agree with how far his fellow brothers of Eden went. He is not a cruel man but can be decisive, blunt, and will stop at almost nothing to do what needs to be done.

Born after The Quiet Rapture, a universe of slowly dying stars and dwindling resources is all Simon has ever known. He was raised as a Child of Eden and taught to revere The Last Tree. Throughout his life, they were in conflict with the C.O.I. for as long as he can remember. He joined the fight against them where he could once old enough. Unfortunately, a mission at Filament Station led to the unplanned destruction of it and death of 62 people. Simon surrendered to the C.O.I. after and was placed in prison for his crimes.
He joined the Convict Realization Program to try and gain back his freedom when the opportunity presented itself. His mission was simple: go into an ocean of blood, investigate the potential resources to be drawn from it by taking pictures, and be set free. Unfortunately, for Simon, the task ended up being anything but straightforward and the C.O.I. kept withholding his freedom by tacking on more conditions. But what he discovered down in the bloody depths was much bigger than him, the C.O.I., and anything in creation... of their universe, anyway.

1. Dreams are how Sleep chooses you. What might draw your character into Somnia— a wound, a wish, a weakness? Would they follow the dream, or run from it?
All he ever wanted was to live. So to be found in a dream between life and death, plucked before his true end- It was probably an easy thing to be chosen. Simon wouldn't run from the opportunity for life beyond what he was given; rather, he'd more likely run towards it. Even though he was willing to be reborn into what he needed to for the good of the universe, he still only ever wanted to live as himself rather than something else.
While his wish is for life that is his own, Sleep would doubtlessly have many wounds to poke at of his as well. He is a man called 'The Butcher' for his savagery in a war he never wanted to wage in the first place. After losing everything he loved, including his trust in the people closest to him, he's been thoroughly hurt and is deeply angry about it all. And while he tends to believe things that are too good to be true likely are after his experiences, well- Isn't it so human of him to still dream, despite that? To want more than he was given, better than what he was offered?
It's why he took the deal with C.O.I. (Consolidation of Iron) in the first place that landed him in the SM-13. It's why he kept trying. They promised better for him. What man wouldn't want even a chance at that? So, if Sleep offered similarly- He'd take it. He might not like it, but he'd still take the dream She provided over heading to oblivion in a heartbeat.
2. Somnia is a slow unraveling—of worlds, and of selves. How does your character respond to fear, transformation, and losing control? Do they fight, adapt, collapse?
Throughout his life, Simon has fought. Whether it be to find his place in a dying universe, as a soldier in a war over what dwindling resources remained, or against forces beyond his comprehension- He has fought. He died fighting for himself and what he believed was right.
No matter how scared he may become, he fights to find a way out of even the worst of situations. It's how he survived the Filament Station collapse when so many didn't. It's why he went into the Conviction Realization program afterwards. He was fighting for a chance, for anything to keep himself alive and not become just another soul lost among the slowly dimming stars. He refused to become nothing but compost for a tree that promised him no peace.
To that end, Simon would fight against the end of realities here just as he did his own. He would fight Sleep herself if he felt that she was responsible for any of it like the God that shattered their reality simply by peering into it. He would fight to try and restore balance, order, or whatever is needed to ensure that other worlds don't fall like his did to some force beyond their control. He would fight to his last, dying breath again if it meant any chance of survival for not just him.
A man can only fight for so long though. While he still has fire in him to keep fighting, it is certainly sputtering and he is tired. But the cause of Somnia, like in his own world, seems bigger than him. Maybe that will help him keep fighting on.

He lived for the people of Eden and he would die for them, for the Last Tree, if it meant continuing its life and by extension theirs.
As he grew older, Simon began to doubt the notion that they were destined to be nothing more than compost for the Last Tree. Wasn't there supposed to be more to life, especially in the wake of The Quiet Rapture? He wanted to live for himself. Mostly, he just wanted to live and likely why his namesake became 'The Butcher' since he was willing to take out anyone that might threaten his own survival during conflicts with the C.O.I.
But he isn't heartless. Far from it, actually, since the attack on Filament Station is what ultimately turned him away from the beliefs of his upbringing; it is heavily implied they attacked the station for more bodies to use to fertilize the tree, but Simon didn't want to continue that mission if it meant rendering the space station uninhabitable. His fellow Brothers didn't mind losing the station if it meant achieving their goal. Unfortunately, his hesitation to act caused the deaths of sixty-two people.
He was branded as a Son of Eden with a mark on his neck. The C.O.I. burned it off of him. He says to his jailer that he didn't choose either of them. From that, it stands to reason that Simon would likely want the choices - including any connections he makes - to be his. He will struggle with feeling unnaturally influenced to bond with others too quickly. Yet, with time, he might be able to open up and get to know people on his own terms.
It will be slow though. It will be difficult. He was sheltered in Eden growing up and he isn't the most social of creatures to begin with. He's awkward at best and harshly blunt at worst, but he doesn't aim to be cruel if he can help it. Most of Simon's life has been following orders. The Father - not his true father, but the leader of Eden - instilled in him young the need to listen. They hung on his every word and what he spoke was like Gospel to them. Like many young adults though, he began to question this doctrine. He didn't disbelieve, not entirely, but had his doubts about what Eden stood for.
Yet, he remained obedient. Loyal. He apologizes to one of his former Brothers when he finds their medallion in the SM-13 by saying "Sorry, Brother, but I choose to live." Despite knowing that he might never be accepted by Eden again after joining the Convict Realization program, he continues to work for what he believes in. His survival instinct is at odds with Eden's nihilistic mentality; even so, the chains of how he was brought up shackle him firmly and he seems to have a great amount of guilt over their actions as a former member of their ranks.
Anger may be a secondary emotion, but for Simon it comes to him easier than anything else. It leads him to be brusque, harsh, and lead to impulsive actions in the height of emotion. Yet, he doesn't mean to be cruel. When he accidentally blasts the research team he's working for with a lethal dose of radiation, he is extremely remorseful. He apologizes once he knows just how severe the damage he's done is and tries his best to make up for it by following orders during the mission.
He will always try to make things right. What that looks like might be up to Simon's interpretation of 'right,' but his heart is often in the right place. So while he might be quick to anger, he's also quick to make things right. He is loyal, but not necessarily a mindless follower. While it might be easier if he was, the best things in life hardly come easy.
